Dinosaurs 101

Type #12
Theropods

the·ro·pod

a carnivorous dinosaur of a group whose members are typically bipedal and range from small and delicately built to very large.

The most famous therapod of them all was probably T-Rex with his long hind legs and short little front legs (or arms if you will).

Therapods were fierce predators that walked on two powerful legs. These meat-eaters had a huge head with large, pointed, replaceable teeth and well-developed jaw muscles. Most Therapods had tiny arms, each with two fingers. Their  bird-like feet generally had three large toes, all equipped with claws (plus a little dewclaw on a tiny, vestigial fourth toe). T. rex had a slim, stiff, pointed tail that provided balance and allowed quick turns while running.

Game Review

Spot it! is the addictive, feverishly fun matching game for every generation. The first thing to know about Spot it! is that there is always one, and only one, matching symbol between any two cards. Got it? Now all you need is a sharp eye and a quick hand to play all five party games packed into the grab 'n' go tin. Including up to eight players, Spot it! is a cinch to learn, plays fast, and is irresistibly fun for all ages!
Once you "spot", the fun doesn't stop.
A Lively Visual Test for the Whole Family
Spot it! is played with 55 circular cards, each decorated with eight symbols varying in size and orientation. There are more than 50 symbols in all, including random yet universal images of hearts, snowflakes, dragons, and lightning bolts, and even words such as Stop and OK. The aim of the game is to be the first to spot the one symbol in common between two or more cards. Don’t be fooled! It's not as simple as it sounds. A match is easily hidden in the array, especially with the pressure of racing frantically against your opponents. The cards change with every match made, so you have to stay focused to keep up. Every match will fuel your fire and agonizing over getting beat to the punch by a faster player only adds to the overall excitement.
Spot it! packs unlimited play potential as you can mix it up with multiple games. The five individual mini-games included in the game booklet have separate rules and objectives. Choose from such contests as The Tower, The Well, Hot Potato, The Poisoned Gift, or Triplet, and play them in any order. In some, players try to collect cards, in others, they race to get ride of cards. For example, in The Tower, each player is handed a card and the remaining stack of cards is placed in the middle of the table. On the count of three, players look at their own cards and the top card of the middle stack for a matching symbol. When someone spots a match, he calls out the symbol and grabs the middle card, and puts it on top of his old card. Now everyone has to look at the new middle card for a match and try to win cards until the middle stack is gone. At the end, the player with the most cards wins. For competitive players ready for a Spot it! showdown, there’s even a tournament point system included in the booklet.
With 15 awards to its name, Spot it! has won the hearts of kids as well as adults. The versatile and skill-building game has also caught the attention of educators and therapists, who praise it for honing kids’ perceptual abilities, attention, and speech-language skills. Not many people can deny the appeal of this game. A group of college kids will get the same kick out of it as grandparents and young kids. Furthermore, the durable little tin that holds the cards makes Spot it! the perfect travel game and boredom buster. You just can't go wrong with Spot it!

Twas a dark and stormy night when the "clickety clack," "clickety clack" of the tree branches slapped the roof of the house. Somehow it sounded like it was inside the house and not outside. I hunkered down in my bed with the covers pulled over my head....
Take a look at the art of storytelling with one of my favorites by Mark Twain, The Golden Arm. My Mom would tell this story so well that the surprise at the end would have my jumping out of my seat!

Dinosaurs 101

Type #11
Therizinosaurs
THER-uh-ZEE-noh-SAW-rus
Therizinosaurs stood out thanks to their unusually goofy appearance, with feathers, pot bellies, gangly limbs and long, and sickle like claws on their front hands. Even more bizarrely, these dinosaurs seem to have pursued a herbivorous diet in sharp contrast to their strictly meat-eating cousins.

Therizinosaurus had a small head with a beaked mouth, atop a long neck. It was bipedal and had a large, heavy, deep body, as evidenced by the wide pelvis, 8 foot long arms and legs that ended in four toes (three of which supported the animal's weight), which were tipped by short, curved claws. The most distinctive feature of the animal was the presence of three gigantic claws on its front limbs. Each of the three digits of its hand bore these claws, which reached nearly 2-3 feet in length. The largest claw was on the first digit.

How the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic Began.....

Celebrating Over 100 Years of Cycling in Durango

The town of Durango has long been enthusiastic about cycling. This photo was taken of the Durango Wheel Club at Bakers Bridge in 1895, on one of Durango's favorite road loops.

How the Iron Horse was Conceived

The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic was the brain child of Tom Mayer and his older brother Jim. Jim worked as a brakeman on the D & R G W railroad which had run the steam powered locomotive between Durango and Silverton since the 1880's. Tom was a young bicycle enthusiast who grew up alongside the tracks to Silverton. Tom challenged Jim to a race to Silverton. As the train came by the house, the steam whistle screamed and Tom climbed on his trusty steel framed 10 speed and pedaled up over the rim of the old volcano and descended into the caldera to the mining town of Silverton. The train takes a shorter and easier route, but with limited speed, so it is truly a race between man and machine. When Tom became strong enough to win, the bragging rights were his, and the whole town knew it.

The First Iron Horse

In 1972 a group of 36 riders decided to celebrate the first run of the train in the spring by accepting the challenge. It's been all up hill since then. In 41 years the Iron Horse has become one of the classic bicycle events in the West. Durango is centrally located between Denver, Albuquerque, Phoenix, and Salt Lake City. The Iron Horse is an ideal early summer meeting of the riders from each of these cycling centers as they attempt to bring home the glory to their own communities. In recent years the participants have come from every state and many foreign countries to ride the famed Iron Horse course. Each year hundreds of riders will feel the thrill of descending into Silverton and looking to see if the train has arrived. And familiar faces will be there, as many people come back year after year to the "best race we have around."

Growth of the Iron Horse

Over the years several events have been added to the classic train race. There have been criteriums, circuit races, road races, tours, BMX races, Trials, dual slaloms, team trail rides, and mountain bike races. There has been a full weekend of events every Memorial Day for the past 41 years. In 2011 the IHBC had over 3500 participants in 5 events. Not bad for a town of only 16,000 people nestled in the mountains of Southwest Colorado!

Perplexus... the twisty, twervy maze that you just can't put down!
This is a maze inside a ball in which you try to move a ball thru the maze on the track. Each challenge is more difficult than the one before and there are 100 challenges to the Original Perplexus.
This puzzle is able to keep a six year old occupied and intrigue adults as well. We think Perplexus helps to develop eye - hand coordination and also helps youngsters focus.
Perplexus is a great game for the car, because it is self contained and portable. You can even make up your own challenges by having one player play for 10 minutes to see how far they can get, then pass the Perplexus to the next player to see how far they can get! Time each other to see who can solve the maze the fastest, For the ultimate challenge, try it blindfolded!

Did Ya Know?

You Sunk my Battleship!

The game of Battleship is thought to have its origins in the French game L'Attaque played during the first World War. Although similarities exist between E. I. Horseman's 1890 game Baslinda, the game is said to have been played by Russian officers before World War I. The first commercial version of the game was Salvo, published in 1931 in the United States by the Starex company. Other versions of the game were printed in the 1930s and 1940s, including the Strathmore Company's Combat: The Battleship Game, Milton Bradley's Broadsides: A Game of Naval Strategy and Maurice L. Freedman's Warfare Naval Combat. Strategy Games Co produced a version called Wings which pictured planes flying over the Los Angeles Coliseum. All of these early editions of the game consisted of pre-printed pads of paper.
In 1967 Milton Bradley introduced a version of the game that used plastic boards and pegs. In 1977 the same company released a computerized Electronic Battleship, followed in 1989 by Electronic Talking Battleship. In 2010, an updated version of Battleship was released, using hexagonal tiles. In the updated version, each player's board contains several on which "captured man" figurines can be placed. Ships may be placed only around the islands, and only in the player's half of the board.
How to play: Battleship is a game of strategy using a gridded board and deductive reasoning! Each player takes turns calling out a location on the grid and the other player responds with, "hit" or "miss". A "hit" indicates where a ship may be placed on your opponents grid. It is then up to you to discern which direction the ship is placed in order to sink the battleship.

Dinosaurs 101

#9 in our quest to name 15 types of dinosaurs
Prosauropods

pro-SAWR-o-pod
before the Sauropods

Prosauropods were large semi-quadrupedal, plant eating dinosaur of the Triassic and Early Jurassic periods. The fossils of these guys were found on most continents and are considered to be some of the world's oldest discovered dinosaur bones!
Although fossils of various Prosauropods have been found on most continents including Asia and the Americas, it is believed that Prosauropods primarily roamed the area now recognized as northern Europe. This is probably due to the fact that a large number of Prosauropod fossils have been unearthed in that area. Perhaps the most intriguing fossil discovery, however, has been found in present-day Madagascar.
Much like modern-day giraffes Prosauropods evolved to adapt to the high foliage available on the high trees of their time. These guys developed exceptionally long necks in order to be able to reach and browse for food at heights no other creature could remotely reach. Such a feeding pattern is supported by their basic defining characteristics, such as a light, tiny skull on the end of an elongated neck, which featured ten or more elongated cervical vertebrae, as well as a long tail that was used to counterbalance to length of the creatures' necks, as well as for defense from larger predatory dinosaurs.

Game Review

Sequence

It's fun, it's challenging, it's exciting, it's Sequence.
Play a card from your hand, place a chip on a corresponding space on the game board when you have five in a row, it's a Sequence.
For 2 or more players, ages 7 and up.
Sequence is a board and card game. The board shows all the cards (except for the Jacks) of two (2) standard 52-card decks, laid in a 10 x 10 pattern. The four corners are free spaces and count for all players equally.
The players compete to create rows, columns or diagonals of 5 connected checkers placed on the cards that the player has laid down. Two-eyed Jacks are wild, while one-eyed Jacks allow an opponent's checker to be removed. The game ends when someone has reached a specified number of connections. We have found that a game of Sequence last from 20 - 30 minutes
Sequence is one of those rare games that can be played by many people of widely different ages at the same time. A little skill and a lot of luck make this an easy game to learn, but sometimes very tough to win.  It's Fun!
Sequence is really easy to learn, and games are usually short, so you can play a few before you move on to something else. If you're looking for a challenge game that you can play with the kids, that "special someone" or a bunch of friends, this is well worth adding to your game collection.

Did Ya Know?

We've got a line on 4 great upcycling ideas
from our friends at Plan Toys!

Use the old BBQ grill and make a garden out of it. Use a coffee filter in the bottom over the holw to keep dirt it and let the excess water drain out. It's a great container. Herbs and small flowers would probably work the best!

A paper or boxed Milk Carton can become a great Birdhouse that your kids can design themselves. All you have to is cut a hole in the box towards the bottom and add a perch (a stick would do nicely). Now, you can have your kids decorate however they want. They can paint it a bunch of different colors or make neat designs on it. They can glue sticks and straw to it. Add buttons or flair, too. Anything they want, they can make it. - See more at: http://usa.plantoys.com/press/four-upcycle-ideas-for-kids/#sthash.PLVJPvzp.dpuf
A summer home for birds can be made from a milk carton or even a box! A little paint, a door cut out, and some string at the top for hanging will make this a enticing home for our feathered friends!

Any time you get an empty cardboard box it can become a million different new toys for the kids! A boat, a house, a store, a stove, a pirate ship, a restaurant..... just add imagination!

Clothespin airplanes can easy take flight with broken clothespins that are just hanging out in the laundry room! Popsicle stick wings, paint, gitter, and some magic will have you flying in no time!

For more detail check this out: Plan Toys

Upcycling is a catchy little way of saying reusing. The idea is that we take something old, something that could possibly be broken or considered trash and give it new life. It’s about being creative, resourceful, and cunning. Upcycling is important because not only do we keep something from becoming waste, but we actually gain from it. Here are four neat Upcycling Ideas for Kids
Grill Garden
A Grill Garden is a great way for your kid to have his or her own garden, and to not waste an old grill. A lot of people have those very small grills laying around, just waiting for the time to break it out. Sadly, that time is usually never. Because maybe you have that new, nice grill you use instead. Or the campground you go to has grills there. Whatever the reason, there’s no reason to keep that grill around. Instead, turn it into a garden.
Simply clean out the grill and fill the hole in the bottom with a coffee filter. This will let extra water go through, but will keep everything else inside. Now, fill the grill with nice potting soil. Once filled up it is time to plant. What to plant? Well, you have options. Things like herbs and small flowers are probably best. You don’t want to plant things will large roots, so keep it small.
Milk Carton Birdhouse
A paper or boxed Milk Carton can become a great Birdhouse that your kids can design themselves. All you have to is cut a hole in the box towards the bottom and add a perch (a stick would do nicely). Now, you can have your kids decorate however they want. They can paint it a bunch of different colors or make neat designs on it. They can glue sticks and straw to it. Add buttons or flair, too. Anything they want, they can make it.
After it dries, add some string and hang it up somewhere your kids can see it from inside. Add a little birdseed on the inside to invite some guests. This is a great way to save on some waste and to get the kids making creative things.
Big Box City
Anytime you have a large cardboard box you have a brand new toy for your kids. Cut the box in half, the long way, and you have two new cities just waiting to be made. Your kids can paint and draw on them making houses, streets, and even people. Add a few props like dolls, cars, or whatever they like and you can make a unique world. Each box can turn into two different cities so you can entertain more than one kid at a time, then add the two cities together to make an even bigger world.
Clothespin Airplane
Clothespins are easy to get, easy to break, and easy to replace. But, instead of throwing them away, you and your kids can make airplanes. All you need is a few clothespins, some Popsicle sticks, glue and some paint. Gluing two sticks near the center of the pin for wings, and a half stick at the base for a tail and you have a great airplane toy. Your child can build several of them, all different sizes, colors, and shapes and have a whole field of planes. This can go great with the Big Box City, too.
Upcycling is an endless world of possibilities. From toys, to chairs, to beds, to dressers; upcycling lets you and your kids be creative, make unique, one of a kind things, and save yourself from having to throw things away. Upcycling is cheap, neat, and green! And it’s a great way for you and your kids to have fun and bond.

And it’s a great way for you and your kids to have fun and bond
