Boredom Busters

Start your Snowdown Costumes
Snowdown starts next Wednesday with all sorts of fun activities for folks of all ages and this year's theme is STEAMPUNK! Add gears and cogs to a top hat, throw on some goggles and boots and get ready to celebrate Durango's most anticipated winter event!

Start doing a "Word of the Day"
Need to expand your vocabulary? Try doing a word of the day! Pick out a word from the dictionary and memorize the definition, then throughout the day, try to use the word in at least one conversation. You will undoubtedly make your vocabulary grow exponentially!

Start a dice collection
Have you ever lost dice from a board game? If you have a dice collection, you would never have to worry about misplaced dice again. You could even make up your own dice games!

Make New Years Resolutions
It's 2015! A new year for new activities. Make a resolution to do something for yourself or others in this coming year. It can be to eat healthier, or to help more around the house.  Whatever it is, make sure you stick to it!

Discover a Dinosaur
Fossilize, dig up, and reconstruct a dinosaur skeleton replica. Learn how fossils form, how paleontologists excavate them, and how dinosaur bones are pieced together to form complete skeletons. Model the process of fossilization by burying your dinosaur bones in layers of plaster "rock." Carefully excavate the bones from the plaster using the tools and techniques of paleontologists. Finally, assemble the dinosaur bones into a complete skeleton.

Go Sledding
Its wintertime and we should take advantage of the white fluffy stuff outside! Grab some friends and a sled or tube to make the most epic sledding hill EVER! See how far you can go or if you can get style points from changing your position on the sled while in motion!

        Glitter-ify Something
Give something the perfect amount of shine by throwing some glitter on it! It super easy too. all you need to do is find an object in need of some sparkle, coat it with modge podge, and cover it with glitter. You can add a second coat of modge podge to keep the glitter on whatever you decided to add some fun too.

      Dance with this Guy
If you play music, this guy will dance to it. Really. He dances to ANY SONG!

Brictek
Stop by the store today and check out all the New Brictek kits that arrived recently. there are so many awesome kits for builders of all ages. Start out with something like a horse and carriage and work your way up to an army base! There is plenty to choose from!

Potato Stamps
  1. Step 1

Choose large potatoes that, when halved widthwise, have a surface wide enough to accommodate a cookie cutter. Place the cookie cutter on a table, cutting side up. Center the potato over the cutter and tap, pressing the cutter at least 1/2 inch into the potato. Using a sharp kitchen knife, cut the excess potato flesh away from the cookie cutter, making slices perpendicular to the cutter; this is a job only for adults. Once the excess potato is removed, pull out the cookie cutter.

  2. Step 2

Make sure to use the proper ink; if you're working on paper, both pigment- and dye-based inks will work, while fabric requires dye-based ink. For paper designs, place a piece of felt beneath the piece of paper to cushion the surface; this will result in a crisp, even print.

Make Activity Dice
Find a big blank block and write all sorts of different things on each side. Like hop on one foot or do 10 jumping jacks. Roll your dice and see what comes up for you!

Bird Watching
There are so many beautiful birds in Durango, why not find some binoculars and see who has made a nest in your backyard? The other day, I found a bird nest right outside my window with some peeping chicks who were waiting for their mother to return with supper. Make sure you don't touch any of the nests, only watch them.

Build a Model
With some of the rainy days we've had, it can get kind of boring sitting inside. So be productive with that time, and build something like a model car! Start easy with a snap together model then you can move up to one that requires gluing and paint. It takes some patience, but the finished product is always worth the hard work.

Be a Superhero for the Day
Make yourself a cape and a mask, come up with your superhero name, and go about saving the day! It can be as simple as picking up a piece of litter and putting in in the trash can to helping someone with yard work and making their day that much easier. It may have only been a simple task, but you saved the day for someone out there!

Practice difficult Origami!
Some origami is really easy while other stuff is really hard. See if you can perfect the ultimate origami creation like the crane or a praying mantis. There are all sorts of different origami papers here at Durango Toy Depot to make amazing folded creations!

Whoa! How cool is this? Blue Diamond Astro Jax have the brightest LED lights in each of the jax that will illuminate the room and amaze your friends and family! Learn some really cool tricks from the CD or make up your own patterns! The possibilities are endless and these Jax will test your coordination. I've learned that when you mistakenly stand to close to what you're doing it smarts for a minute!
Any day is a good day for a spot of tea, cookies, and great company. Whether it be the company of your dog, your cat, your hamster, and your brother or the company of all your bestest stuffed animal friends, you'll be sipping tea and toasting the afternoon in style!
In one afternoon YOU could learn a trade that could pay for your college education or even that new car you've been dreaming of! All the basics are right here, including a balloon pump to assist in the art! (Really, have ya ever tried to actually blow up one of those long skinny balloons?) Learn to

make a sword or a flower or a                                                      groovy hat. The choice is yours!
It's all in the wrist, I mean, twist!

Boredom Busters

  Boredom Busters
Learn how science can be used to give people around the world access to clean water ! Build a water filter tower, test water quality with pH and carbon dioxide analysis, and experiment with water purification by evaporation. I think it would be interesting to conduct dual experiments one with tap waterf rom my house and one with bottles water..... hmmmmm.....

One of our time favorites!
Buck, Buck, Moose! The dealer turns over one card at a time to reveal either a Buck (the ranger)  or a moose card. If a Moose card appears you try to be the first one to place your hand on that color moose card! Be careful, you could lose a moose or even win an extra moose card. The player with the most Moose cards at the end of the game wins!
SQUIGGLE ON THE GO
This little gem has received rave reviews from parents and players alike! In this version you spin the spinner to start then you draw the animal selected beginning with the squiggle on the page! Doodle art at its finest perhaps? Just think of the creativity that could be unleashed on a long car trip, on a plane trip, on a bus, on a scooter, or even on a skateboard! WOW! A great activity while waiting for a meal in a restaurant or after a meal when all the grown ups are talking and having coffee and no electronics are allowed!
I'm thinkin some of DaVinci's greatest inventions started this way! It just takes a little spark!

Shake it up! Work it out!
 Magic Moves is all about…MOVIN’
To the beat of your imagination
Stomp like an elephant! Soar like an eagle!
Swim like a dolphin! Ninety fun, physical commands, a twinkling light show, and a variety of creative way to get kids  3 and over up and moving! Not only can you swim, stomp, and soar but ya have to listen to what comes next so you can continue on this journey like the animals do!

Take a trip to New York and visit the Empire State Building that you built! Nanoblocks are the micro building system
that take you to the sites to see around the world. Unlike the
bigger building systems, these don't hurt your foot when you step on them. Build your own Empire State building that is less than a foot tall. The detail is incredible!
Ah yes, the infamous Doink It Darts! One of the finest magnetic dart boards we've come across and a big part of Noel Night in downtown Durango! This little gem keeps kids and grown ups outta trouble for hours. Who can hit the bullseye? Who can get the lowest score? Who can throw a dart while standing on one foot and get the highest (or lowest) score? Who can call out a number and then hit that number with their magnetic dart? Who can get the best score from the farthest distance away? Who can get the worst score from the farthest distance away? Can Grandma outscore the whole family? See, it is a boredom buster!
