It's really something when an ordinary, everyday object can play such an important part in demonstrating a scientific principle! Grab a wool sweater and prepare to watch the sparks fly!
1. Perform this experiment in a dark carpeted room.
2. Slowly rub the sweater along the carpet.
3. Watch the sparks fly!
Static electricity is at work here. The contact of the sweater's wool against the carpet (both materials being insulators, with electrons on their surface) means the electrons can jump from one surface to the other creating more heat and causing sparks to fly!
